How to use a treadmill?

It may seem easy, you press the power button and you start walking. But here are five ways how to use a treadmill:

1. You can choose the pace

This may seem like the main way to use a treadmill but have you thought about interval walking. What I discovered while on my treadmill is I can go a certain speed say 4.5 or 5.0 and then after 20 minutes, I can do interval training which means going 6.0 or 6.5 for five minutes and then back to my original speed. I can repeat this every 20 minutes.

Not only does it make the walking more interesting. The fast interval of walking boosts my heart rate and boosts my stamina. So when you are on a treadmill you can create these games for interval training and even change the pace of the music when you enter the faster pace period.

It’s only for a short period so you can catch your breath when you go back to your original pace.

2. Watch a movie while on the treadmill

So I walk with my mobile. This is for the simple reason that my mobile counts my steps. I know there are other ways to count my steps but using my mobile is what I am doing. The other benefit is it counts my steps while I hold it up to watch a movie. Watching a movie for me, is the best way for me to walk a decent amount of time.

I have tried listening to podcasts or music and watching movies is the winner for helping me walk longer periods on the treadmill.

Now there is some safety components, such as use the pace to get comfortable. I put one hand on the hand rail to help keep my pace consistent and not fall or trip on the treadmill.  When first starting, walk slow to see if you can hold your device to watch a movie. Other options is to put your device on a stand to watch your movie without having to hold it. This would be a safer option.

3. Use a treadmill at any time

It could be raining outside, it could be bird swooping season. It could even be early in the morning or late at night. By having a treadmill at your home, you can literally use it anytime of the day and any season of the year.

4. Try not to walk in air conditioning

I know it sounds weird but it is generally agreed upon that you walk in the same air as outside. If it’s hot turn a fan on but don’t use the air con. It is better for your body in this way but if you are nervous of over heating then put on the air con.

Also if it’s winter. Do a warm up walk in your jumper but as soon as you get warm. Walk without your jumper so your body doesn’t over heat.

5. Have a drink on stand by next to your treadmill

It’s really important that you have a bottled or glass of water near your treadmill. So if you want to take regular drink breaks you can.

In addition, when I first got my treadmill, I got dizzy every time after a walk. So I found walking on a reduced speed on the treadmill before I hopped off really helped minimize the dizziness.

Now, I don’t get dizzy at all.

Don’t forget when stopping to get off the treadmill to wait till the treadmill has stopped completely and then step off. Stand off to side of it for a moment to ensure you don’t get dizzy.

See walking on the treadmill has some bonuses. Have fun walking for health.
