Remember why you are walking
It’s currently winter in Australia and I have been half getting into a routine to walk 10,000 steps a day and the other half of me is cold and wants to just rug up all day.
I think finding the balance is important. Yes, you may want a day to just relax. But sometimes that day off could lead to a few more days off and then weeks go by and you are occasionally walking but more not.
So to motivate you, remember your reason for walking in the first place. Whether it is for your health or your mental health or whatever is the reason. Remember why. Plaster this why everywhere. Write it down!
On your couch so when you go sit down you think, should I sit or should I go for a walk? And/or place your reason why on the fridge. Place it on your TV. And then think is it time to relax or should I release some energy physically and mentally first by going for a walk and then relax?
Also, think how can I fit in more time to walk?
9 Ways to fit in more walking in your day:
1. One of the best ways is to wake up thirty minutes or an hour before your normal alarm and either go for a walk or walk on your treadmill or walk using the gym’s treadmill.
2. Another great way, is find a way to walk part of the way to your work. So if you normally drive, park further away so you can be forced to walk to work. Or if you catch public transport, maybe get off at the station before your normal one and walk a bit further.
3. If you have stairs that you are allowed to use at work, use them. Find reasons to walk up and down them during the day.
4. When at work and if you sit a lot, walk the floor every thirty minutes. You may not get a lot of steps but it’s better than sitting.
5. If you take your children to sport, instead of sitting down, walk around the edge of the field or the sport complex as many times as you want. Listen to a podcast at the same time so you are learning and walking.
6. If the sun goes down a bit later after work drive to your local beach or park and go for a walk in a nice area.
7. If you are walking from home, see if you are entitled to any breaks besides lunch like a ten minute morning tea and afternoon break and hop on your treadmill and go for a brisk walk or literally walk around your home if you don’t have a treadmill.
8. If you are walking from home, don’t just log in as soon as the day starts go for a walk or to the gym or on your treadmill. And do it again at the end of the day. Working from home can make us feel even more lazy when it comes to walking.
9. In your lunch break, go exploring and go for a walk. Even a fifteen minute walk, will re-energise your body and mind.
