Walking shoes made for walking

Most people when they start an exercise plan, they spend money on new clothes so they feel good when exercising. However, if you are going to spend money, spend it on good quality walking shoes.

So when I am wearing cheap shoes, I notice after a long walk my feet are hurting and sometimes that pain extends up through my calves as well. Because cheap shoes do not provide support to your feet while walking.

Think of it this way, cheap shoes should only be worn for short outings. Like thongs (the shoes) should be worn to the beach so you can take them off once you reach the sand. But wearing thongs for an hour walk and I admit to doing this, I actually got really sore feet and legs and had to get a half hour massage just focusing on my legs because I could barely walk afterwards. And my legs hurt for days. Plus I got blisters on my feet, which lasted about a week. So all this extra pain when I could have just worn proper joggers for the walk.

Good quality walking shoes or joggers help mould your feet to the ground with each step and have support around and under your feet so you can walk comfortably.

Also when you are thinking of buying walking shoes, you might want to think about what you will wear them with. For example, I would walk to school every morning and afternoon and therefore go to work in my joggers. Work didn’t mind but I still wanted them to not look like joggers and look good with most of my work outfits. So all black or all white are my go-to joggers that still can be pulled off with a dress.

Sometimes fitting our walking into our every day, we need to consider where else are you going to be wearing these shoes, for me it was work. I did try and buy a pair of work shoes and left them at work but by the time I got to work my feet were sweaty so I didn’t really want to take my shoes off and change to another pair.

The other thing to consider when buying new shoes is your feet. So for me, I know my feet are wide and I have a high arch. So I need shoes that are going to support my arch and are wide enough that it is comfortable and not suffocating my feet, which in turn will feel sore and probably get more blisters.

Which brings me to me saying next, always get the shoe experts to help you. I have tried on shoes myself before and it felt fine. I even did a little walk around the store. I bought my expensive shoes and then spent a day in them and discovered they were too narrow and hurt. However, if I waited patiently for the shoe expert (they are always helping someone), then they would have asked me questions about my foot in that shoe to help determine if it was the right fit and shoe for me.

Airing your shoes:

Because I walk far every day, my feet tend to sweat, which then make my shoes smell. So airing your shoes at night is a win. Plus you can go to your local supermarket for some shoe spray. Also change your socks daily because they soak up a lot of the sweat each day.

I remember I went to aerials class and had to wear bare feet to climb the silks. My friend moved my joggers to the other side of the room because it was the end of the day and they smelled so bad. Don’t be this person.

And also to avoid smelly shoes, don’t use the same joggers for gardening or mowing. After mowing, my shoes really stink and one day I couldn’t find my normal shoes and wore my gardening shoes to work, well they dis stink. Keep your gardening shoes for gardening and they can be cheap shoes. You don’t have to pay a lot for gardening shoes. They are used more for protection anyway from snake bites to hitting your foot with the cutters.

I hope that helps you work out your shopping plan for your new walking shoes.
